Guest Posting on "House Full of Pretty"

Today I'm guest posting over at Jenny's blog, House Full of Pretty. Jenny is a (very) soon-to-be mama and a fellow lover of decorating and DIY!

Hop on over to see my ideas for designing a nursery when the baby's gender is kept a surprise.  While you're there, check out some of Jenny's great projects!

Mood Board Monday - IKEA Bathroom

I just received the Ikea catalog and seriously they have so many good things!  I love how you can mix and match so much of their stuff to create unique looks.  This week's mood board is a budget-friendly Ikea bathroom design.

House Tour - Week 9: Master Bedroom

Don't forget to enter the $100 HomeGoods gift card giveaway (see post below)!  I'm back today with another "House Tour" post and I'm sharing pics of our master bedroom.

This is another one of those rooms that I've shared on the blog before, but I'm 99% sure most of you missed it since I did the post in my early blogging days.  I also decorated it in my "novice decorator" stage so there are already so many changes I want to make!

But first, here's where we started shortly after moving in:

The wall color was a greenish beige and the trim was a slightly darker shade.  The hardwoods were original.  We bought a seagrass headboard and stools and two nightstands .  The chair, lamps, and rug we moved from our old apartment.

I rearranged the furniture and bought a new rug, curtains, chair, dressers and lamps.  We had the hardwoods refinished and I painted the walls a sort of aqua/sea foam color and the trim bright white.  To be honest, the wall color ended up being a lot brighter than I was originally planning and it's never sat too well with me. I love the color, but I want something a bit more soothing and neutral for my bedroom.

An improvement?  I think so.  Done?  Not quite.  Here are some ideas I have floating around in my head.

1. Repaint the walls.  I'm thinking either a beige or a lighter aqua or blue/green shade.  The curtains are beige and aqua so I need to stay in that color scheme.

2. Buy a new (smaller) rug.  This rug takes up a good portion of the floor and I find myself wishing I saw more of those beautiful hardwoods peaking out.  The dogs have also done a number on it with their nails and there are loose threads all over it.  It hasn't stopped shedding since the day I bought it and keeping up with the dust balls is an unachievable task!

3. Figure out the TV situation.  If it was up to me, there wouldn't be a TV in the bedroom, but Jake likes to fall asleep to it.  This TV is really small (19 inches maybe?) so my vision not being that great, I literally have to squint to see it.  Jake's solution is a (much) bigger TV.  My solution is to get rid of the TV and hang a large mirror over the dresser and add a couple of lamps.  The winner is still TBD.

4. I want to change the knobs on the dressers.  I'm thinking glass.

5. I moved the chair below to our living room so my plan is to replace it with the other Ballard Slipper Chair I have in "storage" (aka a random spot in my house).

6. Bedding.  I love this pintuck duvet, but since we got Striper  (the cutest black lab mix who sheds a hair a second) it's not working.  Her hair gets stuck in all the little tucks and I find myself using a lint roller to try and get it off!  If I go lighter with the walls, I may opt to do something fun and bright with the bedding.  We'll see.

7.  Add shades.  Woven, wood, fabric?  Haven't decided yet.

8.  Hang a curtain from our closet entrance.  I removed the door, but haven't replaced it with anything yet.

9.  Add a floor length mirror somewhere.

10.  Personalize some more with photos, mementos, etc.

So that's the plan stan.  I plan to make these changes in this lifetime  - just not quite sure when yet.

Have a great weekend, and if you missed my other "House Tour" posts, catch up here!

Japan - Mandarin Oriental Hotel

Our time in Japan is coming to an end and we're finishing the trip with a climb up Mt. Fuji.  We'll be starting our ascent later this evening with hopes of reaching the summit for sunrise. Jake and I are climbing with a few of his co-workers so it should be very fun!  Apparently this is one of the busiest times to climb (for locals and tourists alike), so we've been warned that we may have to wait in long queues as we climb.  It should be quite the experience!

We've been so lucky to stay at the Mandarin Oriental - an absolutely beautiful hotel with equally amazing views.  Since I couldn't pack you all in my suitcase, I wanted to share some photos (all photos are from mandarinoriental.com/tokyo).

The two-story lobby.

The hotel room.

The bathroom.

The Mandarin Bar.  I may have enjoyed a few cocktails here.

Oriental Lounge

The Spa Pools.

The Spa Suite.

Have a great weekend!

Mood Board Tuesday? West Elm Challenge

I guess this is my attempt at Mood Board Monday on a Tuesday, but it's actually Wednesday morning here in Japan so I'm all messed up! I'm still taking in the sites in Japan (follow me on instagram to see pics), but I wanted to share with you an Olioboard I whipped up yesterday for the West Elm Pattern Palette Challenge.  They are giving away $1000 worth of West Elm gift cards so I would really really appreciate your vote. Thanks friends!  I hope you're having a great week!

I'm going to Japan.

I was all ready to do another "House Tour" post today but life just got in the way.  It's been a crazy week with work, projects, family, and personal stuff.  It's true sometimes that when it rains, it pours! I decided that I just didn't have time to do a post today...

But here I am doing a post...hmm?

I wanted to let you know that I'm leaving for Japan tomorrow.  Yes, I said JAPAN! So, if I'm slow on emails or quiet on the blog next week, you'll know why.  Jake's traveling for work and I'm going along as his trusty sidekick.

Despite the fact that I haven't packed my bags yet and I'm leaving at 4 AM, I'm super excited.  I'll get to explore Tokyo a bit and we're hiking Mt. Fuji!

If you'd like to follow me on my adventure, you can find  me on Instagram @ homewithbaxter.

Have a great weekend!

My Love Affair With Jeff Lewis

Okay, it's not quite as scandalous as it sounds because 1) he's openly gay and 2) I'm openly married.  But I love Jeff Lewis!

{Image from http://www.jefflewisdesign.com/}

I almost squealed when I realized he had back-to-back shows on last night.  Interior Therapy is back and there's a new show Property Envy on right after with Jeff, Mary McDonald, and Brandie Malay.  Both were sufficiently entertaining, but Flipping Out is my favorite and I am waiting patiently for it to start up again.

I'm so jealous of his design interns.  I would seriously consider packing up and moving to CA if he would hire me.  I know his employees can feel the brunt of his sometimes biting criticism, but he's totally hysterical and talented he has a martini hour at work...c'mon.  And Jenni and Zoila, love 'em too.

I love this kitchen he did at Fox Hollow:

And this closet is heavenly:

What's your take on Jeff Lewis?  Love him, hate him, don't know him, want to be him?

House Tour - Week 8: Guest Bathroom

Happy 4th! I hope you all had a great day celebrating!  We had a fun day packed with a 5k road race, pool time, drinks, barbecue, and a corn hole tournament.  With the 90 degree temps, it's definitely feeling like summer now!

For today's "House Tour" I'm sharing the guest bathroom.  Given we're celebrating the Stars & Stripes, it just felt appropriate...You'll see why in second.

I haven't made any changes to this bathroom since we've moved in.  It has a beautiful vanity with marble counters and custom cabinets, but the rest of the decor is a bit dated. The walls are covered in red wallpaper with gold stars.  Someone made a roman shade to match.

These are the custom cabinets over the toilet.  They provide a ton of great storage!

There's a huge framed mirror.  (These are all old pics, I'm not dressed like this for 90 degree weather!).

I haven't gotten around to hanging more than a shower curtain liner, but it does the trick. I like the bead board and marble detail along the front of the tub.

There's floor-to-ceiling tile in the tub/shower.

And it's actually a jacuzzi tub!

Here's one more shot showing more of the sink area.

With this bathroom we face the same situation as we did with other rooms in the house....It's in great shape and everything is really nice quality, but it's dated and not my style.  Womp womp womp.  A total gut job/remodel seems unnecessary and wasteful (not to mention expensive!), and I do like some of the features of this space.  I plan to give it a mini-makeover at some point down the road.  Plans include:

1. Removing wallpaper and painting
2. Hanging a new window treatment
3. Updating faucet and hardware in both the sink and tub with something a little less brassy
4. Changing out the sconces

Other ideas I have floating around in my head but aren't sold on yet are:

5.. Painting the vanity and/or cabinets over the toilet
6. Redoing the flooring
7. Redoing the tile in the shower

What do you think?  Should we redo the floors and tile or can we make it work?

Kitchen Gallery Wall

Almost (4!) months ago, I shared with you some progress I was making on the kitchen remodel including a new table in our "breakfast nook." A month later, I bought an Orb Chandelier  from Ballard Designs and was making some progress on the space:

This week I finally got around to hanging something on that big blank wall.

Don't look too closely at the pictures.  I haven't replaced the smiling happy people in the packaging with our own personal photos yet.

The frames are the Room Essentials 11x14 frames matted to 5x7 in white from Target.  I'm pretty sure they're only sold in-store.  I plan to print out some of our favorite family photos in black and white to add to the frames.

Just a quick little project, but one step closer to finishing the kitchen!

Mood Board Monday! (Master Bedroom Retreat)

This week's mood board represents a master bedroom I could easily call mine. I love the mix of wood and white furniture, soft colors and subtle pattern. Products are from Ikea, Target, DwellStudio, Zinc Door, Crate&Barrel, and West Elm.
